Hubert Laférerre, Domaine Saint-Denis, has always cared for the environment : "Preventing greenhouse gas emissions seems to perfectly fit my logic of complete respect of the terroir. Therefore, I have decided to run the estate with that objective. I have numerous and exciting projects, as shown by the diversity of those already achieved : light tractors with minimum power, company mountain bikes, burned vine-shoots and barbecues in the vines for lunch, rake work which can replace plows and mowers... and which could be pulled by a horse. Something to be followed... A foal is already grazing in our fileds near Lugny and Chardonnay. Truly all this is no constraint but a new passion for the production of authentic wines."

Mas Neuf presents its new vintages : 2005 for the reds and 2006 for the whites. The estate, which had already built a fine reputation in the French press and in starred restaurants, now launches its cuvée Tradition 2005. Already rewarded by a Gold Medal at the Concours Général in Paris, 14.5/20 in the Guide des Vins de France, quoted in the Gerbelle et Maurange Guide , this wine develops richness and balance, as well as a very Rhone character, built on notes of raspberries, pepper and mild spices. Also marketed in January, the new Armonio vintage, an exceptional wine elaborated with Louis Mitjavile, notorious Saint Emilion winemaker (Tertre Roteboeuf). In March 2007 La Mourvache 2005 will be put on the market. This wine from a single plot, half grenache and half mourvèdre was selected by Cuisine et Vins de France Magazine in September 2006. Thoughtful investment at Domaine Saint-Denis... Domaine Saint-Denis has just invested in a small caterpillar tractor which packs the soil less tightly than human feet ! This micro-tractor also gives perfect visibility over each vine stock while being in the heart of the vineyard. Very sensitive to the degradation of soils through traditional mechanisation, Hubert Laferrère has always prioritised the clay humus complex of each of his plots rather than the time gained by powerful machines. He probably is the only Burgundian to have never made his vines bear the weight of a straddle tractor. "I started working with a gardening tractor back in the 90s , 600Kg instead of the average 4000Kg for the traditional machines on the market at that time. I persevered in this traction method and today, I am pleased to find that my soil hasn't flown into the rivers and that there is a real terroir effect on each of my cuvees".

The summer edition of Cuisine et Terroirs speaks highly of Hubert Laferrère's Mâcon-Lugny 2003 (Domaine Saint-Denis) : pale golden colour. Clear and neat yellow fruit, quince and dry fruit aromas. The round and quite fleshy attack is followed by a more sprightly structure and pretty citrus fruit flavours. The balance is irreproachable in this usually warm vintage. Very good Burgundy at a reasonable price, very polyvalent at the table.
10/06/2006
